Laura Jane Grace makes her stage debut!
In case you were concerned, yes, she is just as awesome as ever. And NO! Hormone treatment and long hair have absolutely zero effect on this rock Goddess’ ability to rock! In fact, I’d say there’s a new found energy there that I’m sure comes from finally feeling comfortable with who she’s presenting to the world.
Also! Is it just me or is ‘Don’t Lose Touch’ one of the best postpunk-punk songs ever written? ‘Cause this is something I’ve been saying for years. I know I’m right. It’s just good for my ego when other people agree with me

#1 Treating Yourself Expo 2012 starts today.
For those unfamiliar with the Treating Yourself Expo it is 3 days of exhibitions from growers and smokers and bakers and vape-ers talking about growing and smoking and baking and vape-ing and hemp and hemp products and just about any damn thing that pertains to marijuana and all it’s forms. Basically, my peers.
For those unfamiliar with yours truly, I’ve spent the last 10 years growing and smoking and baking and vape-ing the magical plant. To pay for all the wonderful marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia I’ve been working and brewing and steaming and baking my way through the independent coffee community. My love for delicious baked goods and espresso is narrowly surpassed by my love of all things smokeable.
The last 6 months I’ve been working for Canada’s answer to Starbucks. A giant corporate coffee company that takes the ideals of the indie cafe and warps and perverts them until it’s a sugarcoated mass produced fraction of it’s former self.
In short, I sold my soul to the devil for a decent salary and medical/dental benefits. I would hate myself if it weren’t for all those lovely medical procedures I could have done should myself or some horrible debilitating disease so choose.
And now we find ourselves back at the Treating Yourself Expo and this lovely spring weekend. Where I will spend 8 hours on a Saturday acting not only as a schill for Lucifer in a coffee cup but I also get to be the one to go outside onto our lovely street front patio and politely explain the smoking by-laws of this, let’s face it, mediocre province. Because marijuana should be by-lawed in the same way as tobacco. Because smoking a nice dube on a nice day should be a crime. Amirite? (That biting sensation you just felt. Yes that was indeed my sarcasm)
Oh the places you’ll go. Is this what my parents felt when they realized that being a dirty, bra burning, hippie and a greasy, punk rock, anarchist doesn’t pay the bills so they best get themselves ‘real jobs’ and contribute to ‘society’? Because I’m not sure this is a viable long term solution for myself…
Ok crazy canadian Conservatives. Who can explain to me what exactly is the Office of Religious Freedom? When did it become a thing? And why the goddamn hell is a canadian PM talking about christians being ‘the most persecuted of all’?
I have another question. With all the batshit religious right-ism that’s been going on lately am I the only one who’s starting to think that as a society we’ve gotten so, we’ll call it open minded and accepting that we’ve gone full circle and are back around to crazy puritanical religious fanaticism? ‘Cause I think I missed that open, tolerant part. And yet there is no other explanation. *spooky*
Note: Tonight I’ll be making short posts/reblogs on creative trans/genderqueer/etc folks from recent history- artists, writers, musicians, etc. Feel free to drop suggestions in my ask box, and they’ll all be grouped here as I post them. Enjoy!
from transradical:
Jayne County is probably the most interesting musician you’ve never heard of. A regular at the Stonewall Inn, County was one of many trans women who participated at the Stonewall Riots.
She worked alongside the likes of Andy Warhol, David Bowie (having a great influence on his Diamond Dogs tour) and was direct influence on a young Patti Smith, who met County by being cast opposite her in the first of several plays they would do together. While Jayne was already an active musician in what would become the punk rock scene, it would still be several years before Patti Smith would begins putting her poems to music.
She was also the inspiration for the titular character in the cult classic Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
There’s really no other woman more deserving of the title “mother of punk rock.”
thanks to Ed Choy for the suggestion!

On an unseasonably warm day in spring in the good ol’ T’dot there are few things that can bring one down. But I always welcome anything that adds a little size and girth to my smile. This link right here (ok up there) did just that. Way to go Canada for even considering such an evolved move. Sometimes it’s good to be canadian. Eh?
I need some confirmation on this please.
I’m shocked but in a good way.
Being who you are in the punk scene is not an easy thing, especially if you’re not a heteronormative cis-male. As the lyrics I stole from Tom and tattooed on my arm go, ‘This kind of dignity doesn’t come easy’ *big hugs* to one of my favourite musicians and a brave, brave soul.

So sad to lose someone so influential and talented. May the force be with MCA and his loved ones.
